1861 - 1943
A man famous for preserving and studying wildlife, especial birds, was William Edwin Saunders. His name lives on at Saunder's Pond in the Westminster Ponds, an area of London previously owned by this world class naturalist. Saunder's was born in London, Ontario on August 16, 1861. He attended the London Central School and the Collegiate Institute and later went to Trinity College in Port Hope. From 1881 to 1883, he attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and returned to his father's drug store as a pharmacist.
While Saunders was an excellent druggist, he was primarily remembered as the naturalist who wrote the column, "Nature Week By Week" for the London Advertiser and London Free Press; the collector who assemble 10,000 nature specimens; the founder of the Ornithological Section and the host of London's "Bird Club".
Saunders died on June 28, 1943 at age 82.
