A tanner soaked raw hide in tannic acid to make leather.   Simeon Morrill was a tanner in London who opened his tannery in 1829 near Ridout and Dundas Streets.  He had immigrated from America and developed his business locally, with profitable exports to the United States.  His tannery was the first business to employ a large number of workers.

In 1848, Morrill was elected mayor of the newly incorporated town of London.  At that time, London had a population of about 4,000 people.

Morrill was known for his imposing white beard, his temperance and his allegiance to the church.
