Pioneer Words Glossary
Word Meaning
adze a tool used to cut away wood or notch logs; like an axe
bateau a flat bottomed boat
bee a gathering in which neighbours help each other.   Example: a quilting bee (make a quilt) or a house raising bee
blacksmith a person who made things out of iron such as spikes, nails, hinges, latches, horseshoes, and wagon wheels
cooper a person who made kettles
corduroy road a road made by laying logs side by side
flax a grass-like plant;  the stalks could be soaked, beaten and spun into linen thread
Gaelic a language spoken by the Scots
grist grain that can be ground into flour
grist mill a mill that grinds grain
immigrant a person who comes to settle in a new land
Loyalist a person (mostly American) who supported Britain during the American Revolution in 1774
peddler a person who travelled from farm to farm trading or selling goods
pioneer the first person to settle in an area
potash a product made from ashes that was used to make soap
shanty the first log shack built by settlers as soon as they arrived
stonemason a person who cuts and builds with stone
tinker a peddler who sold tin ware like pots or tin dippers
venison deer meat
weaver a person who wove wool into cloth on a loom; a good pioneer weaver could make 2.7 metres of 76 centimetre wide cloth a day
yolk a piece of wood, curved to fit over the shoulders of people or animals to help carry or move things
